The Fly who couldn't fly!
An origin story.
When I was about eight years old, my teacher asked everyone in my primary 4 class to write a story. There was no brief, no limitations other than it needed to be your own idea.
In response I wrote a multi-episode adventure story entitled, “The Fly who couldn’t fly,” and despite forgetting more about its content than I remember, I've never forgotten the title nor the fact that I wrote it and read it aloud to the general approval of an audience (my grandmother and younger sister to be precise).
The basic premise of the story was that the main character “the Fly” was afflicted with the inability to fly like the other flies but refused to succumb to this situation and made creative attempts to fly by other means and thus still be a fly.
Some decades later, after repeated attempts at “being a writer” without ever writing anything else, I realised that I was that fly. I had written a self-fulfilling prophecy about my own inability to write.
This substack is another attempt at flying.
I hope you'll enjoy reading.
